The Middle Kid

Lest Owen start to feel neglected, I thought I would give him his very own blog post on how he is doing the summer after he turned 2.

Owen is an absolute sweetheart.  Even with his occasional "two-ness", he is very sweet and cuddly and kind.  I think his favorite thing is to play with his big sister Rachel.  He loves to copy what she is doing - she continues to not always find it amusing, depending on her mood.  Of course, they do have disagreements.  He is using more words these days and some of the longest sequences he strings together go something like "No, Wachel, Mah Dink/Toy/Nack" (that is, no, Rachel, my drink/toy/snack).  We can understand what he is saying about half the time these days which has greatly increased his satisfaction with life.

He also loves to play and run and climb on things.

Being tickled makes him laugh without fail.

He can identify pretty much all of his letters and numbers to 9.  He has also gotten pretty good at putting simple puzzles back together.

Owen has also learned to love watching TV occasionally.  When he is ready for it, he will sit in the glider, get the remote and ask for a "tow".  His favorites are Deego (Diego) and 'Uck (a truck show).

It is often hard to take Owen's picture because he wants to grab the camera.  I have lots of pictures with the outstreched little hand.

Owen definitely loves his 'nacks.  He is usually pretty easy to settle down at meal times because he is ready to eat.  He does not, however, love most fruits and vegetables so we have to sneak them in.  Surprisingly, even though he loves his food, he is usually willing to share with Rachel if she asks him for some of what he is having.  Often his first response is to say No and cross his arms (the sign language he has developed for every kind of refusal), but he usually reconsiders and shares.

Fortunately, he loves beans, cheese and yogurt so his overall nutrition is not too bad.

When he is being silly, he can make himself crack up laughing.  He has an infectious little laugh.

A very helpful big brother to his little "'enny".
Just a few more entertaining (to me at least) "Owen-isms":
  • He just recently started to say his own name.  I am not sure why he was so slow, but just this week I found him referring to himself as "Ah-men".  It is nice to see his developing his sense of self.
  • He often does not clearly enunciate the word no...although he certainly knows how and can yell it very effectively.  When he does not want to have or do something, he uses a short-cut of just "n".  Such as "n-dink" when he does not want his drink.  Also, "n-melk", "n-nap","n-share", etc.  It is cute even when he is being disagreeable.
  • His favorite toys are the "tren", "carr" (with a very clearly pronounced R at the end) and "ba'"
  • He often points out messes (really - he will just point and say "mess, mommy" for anything from a turned-up corner on a rug to spilled drinks) and still likes to clean things up most of the time.  He is particularly enthusiastic when something needs to go in the trash can.  Also, he likes to get a wipe and clean anything he can find.

Owen's Birthday Celebration

Owen is 2!!

GranDave, Mimi, Uncle Travis and Taylor came to town to visit and join the celebration.  We had a lot of fun while they were here.  Everyone enjoyed wearing their dinosaur party hats.

Owen got a fun horse to bounce on.  Rachel named him "Charger Love".

We also got to have lots of fun outside with bubbles.

Here is Owen's dino cake.

Yummy!

More bubbles.

Rachel wanted to help opening the presents.  We had to hold her back so Owen had a chance to do it.

We enjoyed playing with all the fun new toys

Thank you GranDave, Mimi, Travis and Taylor for coming to visit!  We had a fun time.

Happy First Birthday Owen!

To celebrate Owen's very first birthday, we had some of our friends over for wine and cheese.

Here is the crew and the aftermath of our delicious dining experience.

Owen was really not sure what to make of the festivities.

Rachel was ready in full birthday mode.

Owen did eventually catch on and enjoyed his first carrot cake.

Such a big boy!

It was not the fanciest cake, but it was tasty so he was happy with it :).

On Sunday, Rachel helped open presents.

She also worked hard to convince him of how much fun his new sandbox was.

He remained unconvinced so she got to play in there alone for awhile.

After nap time, he was slightly easier to persuade.  He was willing to sit in there with her.

Eventually, he even smiled.  Of course, it was not at the camera. Maybe next time.

Enjoying the Spring

The last couple of weeks we have not been too busy (other than work).  We got to spend lots of time outside enjoying the spring.

Rachel is excited that it is warm enough for the splash pad.  She still loves it!

Owen enjoys watching Rachel play at the park.

We had a mini-picnic in the backyard last Sunday with some watermelon.

We also fed the birds.  It is fun to see them visit our yard.

Here is Owen's much-delayed 10-month picture.  He has gotten much more active with his crawling and finally has some teeth - 3 top ones came in virtually at the same time and he currently has too bottom ones coming out together.

I realize that as of yesterday he is 11 months old...we will get caught up eventually.

8 Months Old!

Another month has gone by...I think they might be getting shorter.  Owen is 8 months old!

He loves eating many kinds of food.

He has elevated it to an art form - all over his face and clothing.

Rachel started in a Mother's Day Out program.  I made her a nap map to take to "school" and she insisted on sleeping on it for almost two weeks.

We have had a mild winter so far so we have spent some time in the garden.  Rachel planted some flowers and some lettuce.

Here she is working on the dirt to plant the lettuce seeds.  We are looking forward to eating it!

Owen is a very happy boy.  There is a smile behind that toy.

He is also pretty silly sometimes.

Here is his official 8 month picture.

He is getting better at standing up these days.

Here is Owen happily eating some cottage cheese.

Sitting up strong.  He also enjoys rolling around the floor and has gotten very good at clapping.  So many new skills :).

Seven Months

We almost lost track of it in all of the excitement around Christmas, but we did remember to take some pictures of Owen at seven months old.  He is getting bigger and stronger every day.  He is a very happy and sweet boy.

He is getting better at eating solid foods.  Peas are still not his favorite.

We took a few pictures in front of the tree before we left town for Christmas.  It is hard to get them both to focus on the camera at the same time.

Rachel enjoyed building a tower of presents - Owen helped.

Much easier to get focus with just one.

One of his favorite faces to make these days.
